Unique Combination of CertainTeed Exterior Siding Products Adds Depth, Dimension to Madison Place Apartments

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – When builder Bob Moss made plans for Madison Place Apartments, a 96-unit garden apartment development in Shrewsbury, Mass., he wanted to create an especially dynamic exterior for its eight buildings through a vibrant blend of siding colors and profiles. Offering the broadest selection of siding materials and profiles in the industry — including 40 different colors to choose from — CertainTeed helped fulfill this vision through a combination of Cedar Impressions® polymer shakes and half-round shingles and Carolina Beaded™ vinyl siding.
“I’ve built 150 homes over the past 10 years with CertainTeed’s Monogram® vinyl clapboard siding, but with this being an apartment development with a row-home design, I wanted to break up the façade so the buildings didn’t look like one big box,” Moss says. The Cedar Impressions shakes, with an authentic wood shake appearance, created a nice focal point. Combining the shakes with the Cedar Impressions half-rounds and the Carolina Beaded siding helped me put together the exact kind of exterior look I wanted for Madison Place.”
A former user of wood clapboard siding, Moss likes the classic look of wood, but not the upkeep that comes with it. The low maintenance and durability of Cedar Impressions and Carolina Beaded siding were strong selling points.
“I’m the owner and operator of this development, so I’d rather not have to do any exterior maintenance,” Moss says. “The low maintenance of these products was definitely another key reason for choosing them. The CertainTeed siding products also have an excellent warranty to back their durability.”
Supplied by distributor Rome Building Products, of Worcester, Mass., the siding was installed by contractor Mota Construction Corp., of Milford, Mass. The contractor was also responsible for framing the buildings and installing the roofs. Moss was very pleased with the outcome of the project and was able to rent out all 96 units before the project was completed. He plans on using a similar combination of CertainTeed siding products on his next residential development in Southboro, Mass.
“It’s so nice having all the colors and profiles available from one siding manufacturer,” Moss adds. “This helped us come up with a more unique look that has been very popular with those who have seen it. I’ve had dozens of compliments on the blend of colors from renters and people visiting the site.”
Cedar Impressions feature 1/100-inch thick, durable polymer, enhanced by a Molded Perimeter Lock™ that creates a seamless appearance. The shingles are virtually maintenance-free, tested to withstand hurricane-force winds. Reproduced from authentic hand-crafted boards, Carolina Beaded vinyl siding provides an original impression for homes of distinction, with ¾-inch panel projection and .044-inch thickness. The product’s deep "V" groove design creates a distinct shadow line between the face of the panel and the rounded bead. And, its low-gloss, brushed finish closely emulates the looks of freshly painted wood. Both products come with a lifetime limited warranty.
As the North American leader in siding products, CertainTeed offers Freedom of Choice™ that no other manufacturer can provide, with the most comprehensive spectrum of profiles and colors of polymer shakes, fiber cement siding, insulated siding, vinyl siding and trim for finishing touches. The company actively pursues strategies to reduce environmental impact and is the first siding manufacturer to issue and publish third-party validated life cycle assessments (LCA) for its vinyl and fiber cement siding product lines. The LCA carefully examines all environmental impacts—from raw materials and manufacturing, to transportation and use, to disposal and/or recycling—gaining an accurate view of true product sustainability. As a result, CertainTeed is the only siding manufacturer to qualify for double credits according to the LEED product transparency credit.
