Ohio Family Wins Home Makeover from CertainTeed Corporation

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed Corporation is proud to announce that the Bielfelt family of Mentor, Ohio is the grand prize winner of the $75,000 Living Spaces® Facebook® Home Makeover Video Contest. The lucky family will receive a complete exterior renovation, which will be documented through a new series of webisodes produced by CertainTeed, North America’s leading brand of building products.

“We had such fun viewing each of the creative entries and are extremely pleased with the response again this year. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to produce, upload and vote for their favorite video,” says Mark Rayfield, president of CertainTeed Siding. “It was incredibly hard to choose just one, but the Bielfelt’s use of comedy combined with the heartfelt request to restore their historic home to its former glory clearly stood out.”

The winning video — entitled “Sclemeel, Schlemazel, Hasenfeffer Incorporated. We’re Gonna Do It!” — features ‘talking’ hounds Laverne and Shirley, mom Paula Bielfelt, grandmother Marylyn, and Paula’s two sons making the comedic case for new siding, porch and decking for their century-old historic home.

“The Bielfelt’s video was among the highest rated by Facebook voters. The well-trained ‘talking dogs’ were hilarious and ‘Nitpicking Nana’ was also a hoot as the catalyst to get the heavily deteriorated front porch and siding fixed,” adds Rayfield. “We are excited to get started on the renovation and transform the century-old home’s exterior into the outdoor oasis the family has been dreaming of.”

After delivering the surprise news to the family in person on June 20, Paula Bielfelt exclaimed, “We are so happy and so thankful. We love our home but it is 100 years old and in desperate need of repairs that are hard to afford on a teacher’s salary.”

Construction will begin the last week of July, with the entire renovation process recorded through video webisodes featuring the family, distributors, and contractors with CertainTeed 5-Star and Master Remodeler credentials.

The webisodes will be available for viewing in the fall on the CertainTeed Living Spaces Facebook page ( and the CTLivingSpaces YouTube® Channel (, along with the opportunity for fans and viewers to participate in the makeover process through a series of related contests. Updates will also be posted to Twitter @CTLivingSpaces.

In addition to the grand prize winner, the top nine finalists will receive $500 exterior living spaces prize packages.
