July Is Smart Irrigation Month
In the hot summer months, it’s hard to avoid over watering your lawn, but saving water is paramount during this time. According to the U.S. Geological Society, about 40 percent of all freshwater is used for irrigation. To help conserve water and minimize environmental impact, CertainTeed Pipe, a leading manufacturer of pipe products for municipal water and sewer, agricultural irrigation and landscape irrigation, offers the following tips for efficient landscaping and lawn care.
Plan your planting. When landscaping, homeowners can make environmentally conscious decisions in the planting phase. First, plant in the fall or spring to avoid the hot summer sun. Second, use mulch to cut down on evaporation. And finally, plant shade trees to keep soil and grass temperatures low.
Use an irrigation system. An irrigation system regularly maintains your lawn with convenience and without the risk of over watering. It is important to install irrigation lines deep underground to avoid damage from soil aeration. Also, try to install smart components that automatically adjust settings for rainfall and soil moisture. And finally, check for savings with your water utility because they often offer rebates for irrigation system users.
Water Wisely. There are several things you can do to make the most of the water you use. Water at night or in the early morning to avoid evaporation, and water more often for shorter periods for maximum soil absorption. Also, be sure to water only when needed and not, for example, right after a downpour.
Count on Experience. Work with an irrigation expert to get the best bang for your buck. It is important to use an irrigation professional who understands irrigation techniques, principles and technologies and understands local conditions and environment.
