CertainTeed’s Roofing Plant in Shakopee, Minn., Achieves ISO 14001 Certification, Strengthens Commitment to Sustainable Manufacturing

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – Affirming its strong commitment to maintaining environmentally responsible manufacturing facilities across the country, CertainTeed’s local roofing plant in Shakopee, Minn., has achieved the globally recognized International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification.

ISO 14001 standards were created to help companies minimize their environmental impact and achieve continual improvement of environmental performance. At the Shakopee plant, the 220 employees are currently saving significant landfill space by recycling nearly 40,000 pounds of fiberglass waste every month. Moving forward, the plant expects to recycle 500,000 pounds of waste annually.

“Our goal is to achieve a zero waste designation where all waste streams will either be recycled or converted to energy, thereby eliminating the need for a landfill,” says Graham Foulkes, plant manager at CertainTeed’s Shakopee Roofing Plant. “Obtaining the ISO 14001 certification is a major milestone and our team continues to develop programs that show our respect for the environment.”

To secure the globally recognized certification, CertainTeed developed a formalized environmental management system that underwent rigorous review by a third party auditor. In addition to ISO 14001 certification, the Shakopee plant focuses on manufacturing sustainable roofing products. The plant produces CertainTeed’s WinterGuard®, Swiftstart, XT™ 25, XT™ 30, Shadow Ridge™, Landmark™ and Presidential Shake™ lines of roofing shingles, including shingles that are ENERGY STAR® rated and contribute to LEED® certification and NAHB Green Building Standards.

CertainTeed is home to 12 roofing manufacturing facilities throughout the United States that are fully engaged in reducing the company’s environmental footprint. Collectively, the plants divert more than 250,000 tons of waste a year from landfills. In addition to asphalt shingles, CertainTeed Roofing offers innovative products that significantly boost the energy efficiency of a home, including Landmark Solaris™ solar reflective shingles and the EnerGen™ photovoltaic roofing system.
