CertainTeed® WeatherBoards™ Fiber Cement Siding Provides Low-Maintenance, Fire-Resistant Curb Appeal Boost for Northern California Homeowner

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed® WeatherBoards™ Fiber Cement Siding is providing a boost in curb appeal and a long-lasting, low-maintenance siding solution to homeowner Don Tackett. After buying a 1980s-era custom home in Folsom, Calif., last year, Tackett realized the home’s original cedar lap siding needed work — it was discolored and beginning to rot, allowing water penetration in some areas. Although Tackett preferred the look of cedar siding, refurbishing and repainting the wood every few years on the three-story, uniquely framed home was not feasible.

“It was going to be too expensive and too much of a hassle to repair and repaint the original siding, so we decided to look for a good, low-maintenance siding material that could give us an authentic cedar siding look,” Tackett says. “We found exactly what we were looking for with WeatherBoards Fiber Cement Siding.”

Tackett was also impressed that the product is noncombustible and holds a Class A (1) fire rating, as their house is surrounded by trees in a region that is prone to forest fires. He hired contractor 3 Generations Improvements, of Folsom, to install 50 squares of WeatherBoards Cedar Lap Siding with ColorMax® Finish in Mahogany stain on the home. Working with a crew of four, the contractor removed the old cedar siding, resheathed the house with plywood, applied housewrap and installed the new fiber cement siding. The crew finished the project in two weeks, receiving excellent feedback from the homeowners and their neighbors.

“The new siding definitely fit well into the wooded surroundings of the home,” says Jeremy Owens, vice president of 3 Generations Improvements. “The wood grain of WeatherBoards is the best I’ve seen in the industry.”
“We get all kinds of compliments from our friends and neighbors on the new siding,” Tackett adds. “I’ve never seen another siding product emulate wood so well.”

CertainTeed WeatherBoards Fiber Cement Siding offers realistic grains and textures, providing the look and feel of wood, as well as profiles to match virtually any design style. Unlike wood, WeatherBoards siding is non-combustible, impact-resistant, impervious to wood boring insects, resistant to UV rays and it will not rot. Backed by a 50-year limited transferable warranty, WeatherBoards can contribute to LEED® certification and NAHB Green Building Standards for recycled content and regional availability.
