CertainTeed Roofing Strengthens Commitment to Sustainable Manufacturing, Achieves ISO 14001 Certification at Oregon Plant
(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed Corporation has reached another important milestone in its sustainability efforts — achieving ISO 14001 certification at its Portland, Ore., roofing plant.
Developed by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 14001 standards were created to help companies minimize their environmental impact and achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance. To secure the globally recognized certification, CertainTeed developed a formalized environmental management system that underwent rigorous review by a third party auditor.
“Environmental responsibility is deeply rooted in our company culture, our operations and our roofing products,” said Tom Smith, president of CertainTeed Roofing. “Achieving ISO 14001 certification at the Portland plant is a culmination of the multiple steps we have taken over the years to reduce our impact on the environment.”
The Portland plant manufactures CertainTeed’s highly popular Landmark™ line of laminated asphalt roofing shingles and accessories, including shingles that are ENERGY STAR®-rated and contribute to NAHB Green Building Standards and LEED® certification. The shingles are manufactured with pre- and post-consumer recycled content, including slag, stone granules, corrugated mixed paper and sludge, which ultimately reduces landfill waste and carbon emissions. More than 90 percent of production waste is recycled and used in asphalt materials for road construction.
“Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our 60 employees at the plant, CertainTeed is evolving into a leader in green manufacturing,” adds Smith. “Over the last three years, the Portland plant has reduced the electricity required by an impressive 50 percent per unit. The facility has also installed solar panels to further reduce utility reliance. These are just a few examples of our firm commitment to the environment through the responsible manufacturing of high-quality roofing products that play an important role in the sustainable building movement.”
CertainTeed is home to 10 roofing manufacturing facilities throughout the United States that are fully engaged in reducing the company’s environmental footprint. Collectively, the plants divert more than 250,000 tons of waste a year from landfills. In addition to asphalt shingles, CertainTeed Roofing offers innovative products that significantly boost the energy efficiency of a home, including Landmark Solaris™ solar reflective shingles and the Apollo® photovoltaic roofing system.
