CertainTeed Receives Third-Party Safety Designation for EverNew® Oxford Vinyl Railing Systems with Glass Balusters, Opening Door to Increased Exterior Design Options
(Valley Forge, Pa.) – The CertainTeed® EverNew® Oxford Vinyl Railing System with glass balusters now meets the standards of Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI), according to a new code compliance research report (CCRR) released by the independent third-party testing agency. Ultimately, the report provides building professionals with a wider variety of attractive exterior design options from CertainTeed.
“The glass balusters are a beautiful and unique design option in our EverNew Oxford Vinyl Railing system,” says Doug Mucher, marketing manager for CertainTeed fence, railing and decking products. “Their transparency allows homeowners and guests to see nature’s beauty right through the railing system, and unlike the more common glass sheet balusters, they will not restrict cool airflow on hot summer days. And, with the new report from ATI, our customers can rest assured that these balusters are also a safe, secure and weather-resistant railing system component that meets stringent International Residential Code requirements.”
The new report, CCRR-0187, confirms that the Oxford Vinyl Railing System with glass balusters meets the structural performance and safety requirements of Section 5.1 of AC 174, Acceptance Criteria For Deck Board Span Ratings and Guardrail Systems, the industry standard for testing railing systems. The report also states that the full railing system is produced under an approved quality assurance program to meet minimum quality control guidelines, which are monitored by an accredited third party inspection agency.
The availability of code compliance documentation for building products designed for outdoor living is of key importance, as it bolsters confidence in how well the products will stand up to exterior elements. Thanks to the release of the Oxford Vinyl Railing System CCRR, CertainTeed was recently able to meet a Michigan contractor’s demand for unique, building code-approved railing options in the construction of a show home.
Code-compliant building products were imperative for Advanced Insulation Systems, Inc., of Traverse City, Mich., while the contractor was building its entry for the 2012 Home Builders Association of Grand Traverse Area, Inc., Parade of Homes. The contractor wanted to use the EverNew Oxford Vinyl Railing System with glass balusters to maximize the visual appeal of the home’s deck as an outdoor entertainment area. Fortunately, the system’s CCRR information came in just in time to help Advanced Insulation Systems’ vision become reality. The contractor was very pleased with the customer support it received from CertainTeed, as well as the appearance of the glass balusters.
“CertainTeed was very helpful to us and did a great job keeping us informed during the product testing process,” says Lori Novak, co-owner of Advanced Insulation Systems. “The glass balusters look great in the vinyl railing system and really enhance the view of the woods surrounding the home.”
Oxford glass balusters offer a blend of high-design and high-quality performance features. Meeting International Building Code requirements, the balusters are made of strong tempered glass and measure 3/8-inch thick by 4 inches wide. Able to be used on vinyl, composite or wood deck surfaces, the balusters are easy to install, as the Oxford railing system’s routed rails eliminate the need to fasten and screw the balusters. The product is backed by a lifetime limited warranty with exclusive SureStart™ protection.
