CertainTeed Landmark Solaris™ Platinum is First Roofing Shingle to Win Global Technology Innovation Award

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed Corporation is proud to announce its Landmark Solaris™ Platinum solar reflective roofing shingle has become the first asphalt roofing to receive an R&D 100 Award. Noting a near record number of entries representing a broad spectrum of global innovations, editors at R&D Magazine selected the shingle as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace in 2011. The roofing industry’s most energy efficient solar reflective shingle was up against new inventions representing a cross-section of industry, academia, private research firms and government labs.
“It is a tremendous honor to receive an R&D 100 Award and I am particularly proud of our team’s achievement as the first roofing shingle ever to be recognized,” noted Husnu Kalkanoglu, vice president of research and development for CertainTeed Roofing. “Developing the roofing industry’s best performing solar reflective shingle also reflects our ongoing dedication to product innovation.”
Landmark Solaris solar reflective roofing is an energy-saving breakthrough that puts cool roof technology to work. In addition to providing excellent protection from climatic elements, the aesthetically pleasing steep-slope architectural shingles repel the sun’s rays and radiate heat to lower surface temperature of the roof. With a solar reflectance of 40 percent, Landmark Solaris Platinum has the highest level of solar reflectivity available for colored asphalt shingles, providing a reduction in energy usage and utility bills giving homeowners savings over the life of the roof. By lowering rooftop temperatures, the shingle can also mitigate the “Urban Heat Island Effect” and help reduce smog formation and greenhouse gas emission.
Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of Innovation,” have been a benchmark of excellence for industry sectors as diverse as telecommunications, high-energy physics, software, manufacturing, and biotechnology. Past winners have included revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market, with many becoming globally commonplace, such as HDTV, the automated teller machine (ATM), Nicoderm® anti-smoking patch and fax machine. The R&D 100 Awards banquet will be held on November 1 in Orlando, Fla. A complete list of 2012 winners can be found at www.rdmag.com.
