Awards Showcase Product Solutions for Outstanding Environmental Acoustics™ Design

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed Ceilings was recently honored at the 2014 Ceilings and Interior Systems Construction Association (CISCA) Convention in Las Vegas, receiving three Construction Excellence Awards for projects utilizing the company's Decoustics custom acoustic solutions. The award-winning projects serve as a showcase for manufacturers in the interiors industry, demonstrating how CertainTeed ceilings deliver the architect's and property owner's vision and contribute to Environmental Acoustics™ Design.

In the Ceilings category, CertainTeed received a Gold award for the new Eaton Corporation North American headquarters in Beachwood, Ohio. The company also earned a Silver award in the Acoustical Solutions category for the new Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. Additionally, Decoustics garnered a Bronze award in Interior Finishes for the design of a new food court at Temple University in Philadelphia.

"While each of these projects presented unique challenges, the end goal was the same—create inviting, comfortable environments where people can thrive," said Christian Kellett, director of sales and marketing for Decoustics. "Whether seeking to bolster employee engagement, creating peaceful healing environments, or building a community space where people gather to share thoughts and a meal, these award-winning projects showcase the ideal intersection of design and acoustics."

To achieve the complex interior design of the new Eaton headquarters, Pickard Chilton Architects, Inc., of New Haven, Conn., specified a custom Ceilencio® suspension system with Quadrillo® wood-veneer and Claro® fiberglass ceiling panels, all from Decoustics. Manufactured to project specifications, the ceiling system creates a dynamic look while conforming to the crescent-like curves of the building. Also, the panels bring exceptional light distribution and acoustic control, helping to maximize employee productivity. Additionally, the custom suspension grid and butterfly clips provide the extra support needed for large panel-integrated light fixtures and speakers, as well as easy maintenance access.

To attract both students and passers by to a new two-story food court at Temple University, MGA Partners Architects, of Philadelphia, created a complex geometric ceiling using a custom Ceilencio suspension system and triangular Claro panels. The undulating ceiling provides visual interest during the day and a striking lighting element when seen from outside at night. It also establishes sound acoustics that enable conversation among diners, and is downwardly accessible for routine maintenance.

A similar mix of custom acoustic solutions provided the sound absorption and light distribution needed to inspire collaborative research and patient comfort at the new, 21-story Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning. Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects selected the products for the building's vibrant open spaces, as well as its laboratories and classrooms. The Claro fiberglass ceiling panels' superior acoustical performance was ideal for establishing a quiet, restful environment for patients and their families, while also fostering collaboration among physicians and staff.
